While you're showering your head, you probably scrub your beard with whatever shampoo or soap bar is closest. That makes sense. It's all hair, right?
Not really. And the more you do this, whether you know it or not, the more your beard starts to feel rough and the skin underneath gets dry and itchy.
The problem isn't complicated. Your beard and the hair on your head are very different, and they need different care.
Why your beard isn't just long scalp hair
Your beard hair is thicker and coarser than scalp hair. Beard hairs are usually 2-3 times thicker than scalp hair, and have a different cross-section shape that makes them wiry and curly. Beard hair dries out faster.
The real issue? Your scalp produces sebum (oil) that keeps hair moisturized, but your facial skin produces less oil relative to the amount of hair your beard contains. So your beard naturally stays drier than the hair on your head, even when you're doing everything right.
The skin underneath matters too. Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive than scalp skin.
What regular shampoo actually does
Regular shampoo is formulated to cut through heavy oil production on your scalp. It uses strong detergents (often sulfates) that strip away sebum, product buildup, and dirt. That's fine for your scalp, which produces plenty of oil and recovers quickly.
But when you use that same shampoo on your beard, it strips away the limited natural oils your facial skin produces, leaving both your beard and skin dry. Regular shampoos often have alkaline pH levels ranging from 7 to 9, while beard wash (like Novus Beard Shampoo) is typically formulated with a lower pH of around 4.5 to 5.5 to match facial skin.
Over time, this creates a lot of problems. Your beard starts feeling rough, the skin underneath gets flaky, itchy, or red. Your beard starts looking duller because it's not retaining moisture. And the more you wash with regular shampoo, the worse it gets.
Beard wash is built for your actual problem
Beard wash uses gentler cleansing agents that remove dirt without over-stripping. It's formulated with your beard's specific needs in mind: clean the hair, protect the skin underneath, and maintain moisture.
The pH balance matters more than you'd think. Your skin and beard have a natural pH of around 4.5-5.5, which protects your skin from bacteria and keeps moisture locked in. Beard wash respects that balance unlike regular shampoo or soap bars.
Can you use regular shampoo in a pinch?
Yes. Once or twice won't cause major damage to the beard and skin underneath. But if you're doing this regularly, you're setting yourself up for the problems mentioned earlier like chronic dryness, a rough texture, irritated skin, and a beard that looks worse the longer you let it grow, filled with dandruff from that dry skin.
It's like washing your car with dish soap. Sure, it cleans the car. But it also strips the protective coating and leaves the paint looking dull. You can do it, but it's not going to work out well long-term.
What actually happens when you switch
Using a dedicated beard wash (like Novus Beard Shampoo) addresses the root cause of these problems. Your beard will feel softer within a week because it's actually retaining moisture. The skin underneath will calm down because you're not disrupting its natural pH every time you shower. You'll notice fewer of those white flakes (beardruff) because the skin is no longer drying out.
And over time, your beard just looks healthier (because it actually is). Healthier skin means healthier hair follicles. Healthier follicles mean better beard growth and a fuller appearance.
How to actually wash your beard
Step 1: Start with lukewarm water (hot water strips moisture, avoid it). Wet your beard thoroughly, making sure the water reaches the skin beneath the hair.
Step 2: Apply a small amount of beard wash and massage it down to the skin. You're cleaning the skin as much as the hair, that's where oil, dirt, and dead skin accumulate.
Step 3: Rinse completely. Product buildup causes the same dryness you were trying to avoid, so don't rush this step.
Step 4: Pat your beard dry gently with a towel. Don't rub because that causes breakage and makes your beard frizzier.
Step 5: While your beard is still damp, apply the Novus Beard Oil. This helps moisturizing your beard, which reduces the itch and dandruff.
Step 6: Lock in the moisture by adding a bit of the Novus Beard Balm. This helps lock in the moisture and gives your beard a very nice fragrance.
Step 7: Comb and brush it through once it's mostly dry to distribute natural oils and train the hair to grow in the direction you want. You can find our Beard Brush & Comb here.
Make the switch
Your beard needs different care than your scalp hair because it is different. That's just biology. Using the wrong product for years will leave you with a rough, uncomfortable beard that never looks quite right no matter what else you do.
Using the right product costs almost nothing more than regular shampoo and takes the same amount of time. The difference in how your beard feels and looks is noticeable within days.
If you've been using regular shampoo on your beard and wondering why it never feels or looks good, this is probably why. Switch. Give it two weeks. Thank us later.
